MOT emissions failures explained

An MOT emissions failure doesn’t automatically mean your catalytic converter or DPF is dead — and replacing one without reading the failure report properly is how people end up buying the same part twice. Here’s what the test measures and what each kind of failure actually points to.

What the test measures

Petrol vehicles are gas-tested at the tailpipe: carbon monoxide (CO), hydrocarbons (HC) and lambda — a measure of the air/fuel mixture, where 1.00 is the ideal balance.

Diesel vehicles are smoke-tested: the opacity of the exhaust under load is measured against the limit for the vehicle. Since May 2018, the MOT has been stricter on diesels — visible smoke of any colour is grounds for a major defect, limits are tighter for newer vehicles, and the tester also checks that the DPF is physically present and shows no evidence of tampering (see DPF removal and the law).

Reading a petrol failure report

High CO, everything else normal

This is the signature of an under-performing catalytic converter. If the engine is running correctly and only the CO figure is out, the cat is the likely culprit — check why cats fail before replacing it, so the cause doesn’t kill the next one.

High HC

Hydrocarbons are unburned fuel, and unburned fuel means an engine problem, not a cat problem: a misfire (plugs, leads, coils), a worn engine passing oil, or injection faults. The MOT limit is generous (up to 200ppm) — a reading well above 50ppm suggests the engine needs attention even if the car scraped a pass. Bear in mind that a misfiring engine dumping fuel into the exhaust is precisely what destroys catalytic converters, and note that manufacturers typically refuse warranty claims on a replacement cat where the vehicle’s HC reading shows an uncorrected engine fault (above roughly 60ppm).

Lambda out of range

A lambda below 1 means the engine is running rich; above 1 means lean — or, very commonly, an air leak in the exhaust letting the sensor breathe outside air. A high HC plus low lambda plus high CO combination almost always traces to a fuelling or ignition fault rather than the cat itself.

Reading a diesel failure

Excess smoke points to combustion or air-system problems — injectors, turbo, EGR, air filter — or a DPF issue. A diesel with a working DPF should produce almost no visible smoke at all, so smoke on a DPF-equipped car means either the filter has failed or something upstream is overwhelming it. Work through why DPFs block before condemning the filter.

Keep the failure report

Whatever you replace, keep the emissions failure printout. It’s the objective record of what was actually wrong — and if you ever need to make a warranty claim on a replacement cat or DPF for an emissions issue, the manufacturer will require a copy of it (see warranty and how to claim).
