In our range, look for an H after the digits of the part number and Type Approved on the product page.

What “homologated” means

Type approval confirms that production samples of a vehicle, system or component will meet specified performance standards. A technical service carries out the tests and an approval authority issues the approval, and no approval is issued unless the manufacturer can show that the parts it goes on to make will keep matching the samples tested, which is called conformity of production1.

UN Regulation 103 sets out how replacement catalytic converters are approved5. The Euro 5 and Euro 6 rules use the same tests for every replacement “pollution control device”, the law’s term for the parts that control and limit a vehicle’s emissions, so DPFs and GPFs are covered too. The replacement is fitted to a test vehicle in place of the original part and checked for emissions, durability and compatibility with the vehicle’s on-board diagnostics (OBD), the system that monitors the emission controls and stores fault codes3,6.

An approval covers specific vehicles, and the part may only be fitted to a vehicle its approval covers5. Under the Euro 5 and Euro 6 rules it must come with the list of vehicles, with their years of manufacture, that it is approved for3. That is why a homologated part is listed against particular models and years. BM Catalysts, who make every part we sell, say their homologated range is tested in accordance with UN Regulation 1037.

When the law requires a homologated part

The rules are in the Motor Vehicles (Replacement of Catalytic Converters and Pollution Control Devices) Regulations 2009, which apply across the UK5:

Part

Vehicle

Must it be type approved?

Catalytic converter

First registered before 1 March 2001

No, but the replacement should perform as well as the original2

Catalytic converter

Passenger vehicle or light van, type approved with a catalytic converter and first used on or after 1 March 2001

Yes2,5

DPF

Euro 4 or earlier

No2

Catalytic converter, DPF or GPF

Euro 5 or Euro 6

Yes2,5,6

Euro 5 applies to vehicles registered from 1 January 2011, although some were registered earlier, and the government’s guidance says the Euro level is on the vehicle’s registration document (V5C)2. See our Euro emissions standards guide.

The rules are aimed at businesses: a business commits an offence if it supplies or fits a part that does not meet them, and “supply” includes offering or displaying a part for sale5. Our guide to type approval and the law covers the penalties.

Homologated, original, non-homologated and universal

Original replacement: the vehicle manufacturer’s own part. It is allowed where an approved part is required, if it is marked and documented as the original replacement for your vehicle5.

Homologated (type approved): an aftermarket part approved as a replacement for the vehicles on its approval3.

Non-homologated: not approved, so it can be fitted only where the law does not require approval, such as a catalytic converter for a vehicle first registered before 1 March 2001 or a DPF for a Euro 4 or earlier vehicle2.

Universal: a catalytic converter made to be adapted to many exhausts. BM Catalysts, for example, make their universal cats without necks so that pipe stubs of the required bore can be welded in8. Where the law requires an approved part, one can be fitted only if its approval covers your vehicle5.

Does the MOT check for a homologated part?

Not directly. The tester checks the visible emission control parts, such as the catalytic converter and DPF, and fails a vehicle if equipment fitted by the manufacturer is missing, obviously modified or obviously defective (on petrol vehicles, in full for those first used on or after 1 September 2002), or if a DPF has been tampered with. The emissions are measured too. None of these checks covers the approval mark9.

So a pass does not prove a part is approved, and fitting a non-approved part where the law requires an approved one is still an offence for the business that supplies or fits it5. The road-use rules apply as well: a vehicle first used from 1 January 2001 must not be used on the road if it fails its emission limits because its exhaust has been altered or an emission control device is not in good and efficient working order, although it may be driven to a place where a faulty device is to be repaired or replaced10.

What homologated means when you buy one

Fit and Euro level. The approval ties the part to particular vehicles and their Euro level. BM Catalysts point out that parts for different vehicles and Euro levels can share the same housing and pipework yet differ inside, so a part that can be made to fit is not necessarily approved for your vehicle11.

Emissions. A homologated part has been tested on a vehicle in place of the original3, but it cannot make up for an engine fault: the cause of the old part’s failure has to be fixed first, or the new one can be damaged too12. See failed your MOT on emissions?

Warranty. Our catalytic converters and DPFs carry a 2-year warranty, 3 years on Premium silicon-carbide DPFs, covering manufacturing defects. BM Catalysts exclude, for example, impact damage, oil fouling and exhaust paste used in front of a catalytic converter12. See how to claim.

How to tell if a part is homologated

Look for the approval mark. A type-approved catalytic converter or DPF is permanently marked with an approval mark, the manufacturer’s name or trade mark, and its make and part number2. Under the EU-derived rules the mark is a lower-case “e” in a rectangle followed by the number of the country that granted the approval, with the approval number next to it3; 11 is the United Kingdom2. Parts approved under the UN scheme carry a capital “E” mark instead1. Wherever possible, the mark should be visible once the part is fitted3.

Check the vehicle list. If your vehicle is not on the list that comes with the part, the part is not approved for it3.

Look for a warning label. A part that is not type approved must be marked or labelled to say so: on a catalytic converter, “Illegal to supply for type-approved vehicles first used on or after 01/03/2001”; on a DPF, “Illegal to supply for vehicles approved to EC Regulation 715/2007”2.

Ask for the certificate. If in doubt, the government’s advice is to ask the manufacturer or distributor for a copy of the type-approval certificate2.

In our range, homologated parts have an H at the end of the part number (HP on Premium DPFs) and show Type Approved on the product page, which lists the vehicles, years and Euro level each part is catalogued for (see BM Catalysts part numbers explained). Each BM unit also has a serial number of six letters beginning with C or D, usually pin-stamped on its body: note it before fitting, as it is needed for any warranty query12.

After Brexit: who approves parts now?

In the UK, approvals are issued by the Vehicle Certification Agency (VCA) on behalf of the Secretary of State for Transport, under the GB, UK(NI) and UN schemes; EU approvals are granted by the approval authorities of EU member states1. The UK is a party to the UN agreement behind UN approvals13, and those approvals continue to be accepted in Great Britain and Northern Ireland without any further approval14. The 2009 Regulations still apply across the UK, were last updated in 2020, and still refer to the same EU-derived and UN approval standards5.

Finding a homologated part for your vehicle

Every part we sell is manufactured by BM Catalysts.
